UNIC and OHCHR Host Disability Creative Week

The United Nations Information Center in Indonesia (UNIC) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) commemorated International Disability Day and Human Rights Day by organizing a series of events at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta from December 5 to 7, 2024. The event, titled "Disability Creative Week", featured film screenings, art exhibitions, inclusive fashion shows, and workshops aimed at fostering inclusivity. The event was held in collaboration with Bumilangit Entertainment, the United Nations Association of Indonesia (UNAI), and the International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of their "Decent Work for All" campaign. The event showcased over 70 unique objects and activities created by talented individuals with disabilities in Indonesia, including a film directed by a visually impaired filmmaker and featuring a script penned by a deaf writer. The event also included a fashion show presented by the Layak Community, which aims to empower individuals with disabilities to express themselves with confidence and grace. According to ILO data, approximately 1 in 6 individuals globally experience significant disabilities, but their rights to secure decent work are frequently overlooked. In Indonesia, nearly 90 percent of people with disabilities are unemployed, despite approximately 38.8 million individuals being identified as having disabilities according to the 2020 National Census.
